Shufflepuck cafe play1/31/2024 ![]() Shufflepuck has a great tune, and the bar noises are excellent. You can control the size of your paddle and the responsiveness of the puck: having a super-fast puck is fine when you're serving, but wait until you have to try and return it! GRAPHICS AND SOUND These range from the wimpy bespectacled "Skip" (no relation, thank you very much anyone who suggests a similarity between myself and him will regret it!!!) and the droid DC-3, who are both fairly poor, right up to Biff Raunch, who is, err. There are nine players in the bar: eight aliens and an android. The aim is to whack the puck so fast that the other player misses it and it goes over his side of the table. A small disc called a puck is placed on a table, and two players have "paddles" which they use to hit the puck to the opponent's end of the table. ![]() For that matter, they'll only let you live if you prove yourself at Shufflepuck!Įveryone must have seen this game at one time or another. The unpleasant patrons of the establishment will only let you pass if you prove yourself by playing all of them at the old bar game Shufflepuck. There's absolutely no way out: you have to use that 'phone. Well, that's the situation you're in in Shufflepuck. Unfortunately, the only 'phone for miles is in the back of a crowded bar, and the drinkers at the bar don't look too friendly. It happens to all of us (well, it happens to me an awful lot!): it's very late at night, and you desperately need to use the 'phone'. As this is a straight USA import, it's got a slightly shortened screen, but despite this the graphics carry the game. From the weird intro tune to players' exclamations of disgust, the sound is neatly atmospheric. Shufflepuck is simple, but with gameplay that s truly off-world. Practice can be had by playing any of the players singly or by programming a robot to be as good or as bad a player as you want. They have their own style and weaknesses, but it will take a lot of playing to beat Biff Raunch or Princess Bejin, the Cafe's number two player who just happens to have a telekinetic serve. They range from the wimpy Skip Feeney through the initially good by increasingly tipsy Lexan Smythe- Worthington to the reigning champion and hard man, Biff Raunch. To get through to the phone you've got to beat all eight of the local players. In this version a point is marked by smashing the glass screen in front of the opposing player. Each player has a paddle and the aim is to get the puck past the opposing player. ![]() Shufflepuck is like Air Hockey, the ancient arcade attraction that looked like a cross between a snooker table and a steam iron. You can see a phone way over in the far corner, but these people won't let you by until you've proved your worth at the Shufflepuck Cafe. The clientèle appear to be what s left after the dregs of humanity and a variety of other races have decided to call it quits. No, in dive terms this one's the Acapulco cliffs. This place isn't a quiet martini and wallpaper music establishment. Grabbing your jacket from out the back, the only possibility of contacting the AA seems to be the local bar. Too bad it had to be the one for Wrong Side of Town (Central). On the way to closing the biggest sale you've ever negotiated, your new (possibly red) Nash Sombrero decides to play up, forcing you to take the nearest exit. Things have taken a downturn in your life. In the future it'll be easier: just look for the jacket. SPOTTING a sales rep out on the road is easy - he's the guy in the red Orion with a jacket hanging up in the back.

Ved mehta celebrated writer the yorker1/31/2024 ![]() Last week the Ink Spill: New Yorker Cartoonists News and Events blog featured Updike’s Thurber cartoon, courtesy of Miranda Updike this week, the blog adds a letter that Updike had written home to his parents and other “Plowvillians,” provided by Michael Updike. Updike had written a fan letter to the famed cartoonist asking for a drawing to hang on his bare wall, and Thurber obliged. that is, James Thurber’s drawing of a dog made especially for young Updike, whose first ambition was to become a cartoonist. Pets weren’t allowed in the dorm when John Updike went to Harvard in the fall of 1950, but he took his dog anyway. ‘Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu’ is regarded as a classic. ![]() Is this reportage or an essay? Updike tried to do both. One tires of Updike’s verbal pyrotechnics, his asides (authorial interventions, commentary). It is the work of a brilliant, undeniably talented writer whose dazzling performance-like that of some virtuosos-comes between you and the subject matter, i.e., the focus of the piece: the great baseball player Ted Williams, his last game. It is too fine (typical of New Yorker pieces) too ‘literary and (at times) too flowery. “What is wrong-in my ‘contrarian’ opinion-with Updike’s piece? ![]() The Bosox slugger hit a home run in his very last career at-bat, and Updike was in the stands to memorialize the moment with what became one of his most famous pieces of prose.īut blogger Roger W. Hall of Fame sportswriters have said as much, though the essay’s monumental status was no doubt helped by Ted Williams. John Updike’s “Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu” is widely regarded by sportswriters and sports fans everywhere to be the best piece of sports writing ever done by anyone. One was style: ‘His writing is so visual, at the level of image and metaphor, it’s almost redundant to put it into a visual medium.’ In addition, ‘The “American small town, Protestant middle class” as he described his milieu, has not been of very big interest, personally or cinematically, to the Hollywood establishment.’ ( The Witches of Eastwick with its supernatural element was thought more accessible for audiences.) Nor has Updike had a film-industry champion eager to put his work onscreen the way some other writers of his era have, Timberg wrote. “Shortly after Updike died in 2009 at the age of 76, Scott Timberg pondered Updike’s ‘dozens of novels and several hundred short stories’ for and saw several reasons why Updike did not make it to the movies much. There’s a 1970 movie of his novel Rabbit, Run, with James Caan, TV-movie Too Far to Go (1979) from Updike short stories, movies and TV productions inspired by the novel The Witches of Eastwick and a few shorter productions. There have been a few adaptations of the works of Updike, one of the most admired American writers. Heldenfels replied, “I do not know of any plans. The Hastings Tribune‘s Rich Heldenfels (Tribune News Service, Nebraska) was asked by a reader, “Do you know of any plans to make (remake) a film based on any John Updike novels?”

Viking lifecraft1/31/2024 Torqeedo is the market leader for electric mobility on the water. VIKING received official approval for the LifeCraft survival craft on March 8 from the Danish Maritime Authority (DMA) as a “Novel Life-Saving Appliance” meeting the requirements for replacing conventional lifeboats on passenger ships. Christoph Ballin, co-founder and CEO of Torqeedo. It has been a pleasure to participate in its development,” said Dr. “VIKING’s new LifeCraft is truly innovative and offers compelling benefits to passenger ship operators. “We achieved this with the wind at our front as well as our backs, which makes it an even more impressive feat.” “The LifeCraft exhibited superior manoeuvrability, sailing away from the ship much faster than required,” said Niels Fraende, VIKING’s vice president of sales for Cruise & LifeCraft. ![]() Then they performed a 24-hour controlled drift test in battering seas with no damage to the vessels. The boats were launched and manoeuvred along the weather and lee sides of the ship, demonstrating their flexibility to move rescue capacity to wherever it is most needed. Wave heights were between 3.6 and 4.6 meters (11.8-15.1 ft) with peaks up to 10 meters (32.8 ft) – 50 percent above the stipulated heavy weather testing requirements – and wind gusts up to 18 meters per second (40 mph) were recorded. The tests, witnessed and approved by DNV-GL, took place in the North Sea. The electric boats successfully completed heavy weather sea trials in October, proving their ability to deploy and operate dependably under the most extreme wind and sea conditions. One motor is installed at each corner of the boat and all are networked into an integrated energy monitoring system, giving the operator a clear view of motor and battery status at a glance. Each craft has four Cruise 4.0 electric pod drives installed, powered by Power 24-3500 lithium-ion batteries in 48-volt banks. The LifeCraft’s propulsion package consists of multiple, smaller motors for redundancy and manoeuvrability. Conspire 20161/31/2024 ![]() ![]() for which we varied only the partisanship of the accused conspirators. In our second analysis, we provide an alternative test of the asymmetry thesis by examining beliefs in five “content-controlled” conspiracy theories in the U.S. We buttress this analysis with an examination of the relationship between left–right ideology and belief in 11 conspiracy theories across 20 additional countries. As this impasse persists, much hangs in the balance, including the development of strategies for combating the spread of conspiracy theories (Wittenberg & Berinsky, 2020).įirst, we examine correlations between partisanship/ideology and beliefs in 52 conspiracy theories in the U.S. On the other hand, some studies fail to identify such asymmetries, instead concluding that conspiracy theorizing is a “widespread tendency across the entire ideological spectrum” (Oliver & Wood, 2014 see also Enders et al., 2021). ![]() On the one hand, several studies find supportive evidence for this asymmetry thesis in the form of correlations between Republican/conservative self-identification and various operationalizations of conspiricism (e.g., van der Linden et al., 2021). Are, for example, partisanship or political ideology related to conspiracy theorizing? One argument, dating back at least to Richard Hofstadter’s The Paranoid Style ( 1964), holds that Republicans and conservatives are more likely to believe conspiracy theories than Democrats and liberals. While an emerging research agenda has identified many psychological factors associated with beliefs in conspiracy theories (Douglas et al., 2019), the literature remains divided about the political characteristics associated with those beliefs. Instead, the strength and direction of the relationship between political orientations and conspiricism is dependent on the characteristics of the specific conspiracy beliefs employed by researchers and the socio-political context in which those ideas are considered. In no instance do we observe systematic evidence of a political asymmetry. Finally, we inspect correlations between political orientations and the general predisposition to believe in conspiracy theories over the span of a decade. In our second test, we hold constant the content of the conspiracy theories investigated-manipulating only the partisanship of the theorized villains-to decipher whether those on the left or right are more likely to accuse political out-groups of conspiring. this analysis is buttressed by an examination of beliefs in 11 conspiracy theories across 20 more countries. First, we examine the relationship between beliefs in 52 conspiracy theories and both partisanship and ideology in the U.S. Employing 20 surveys of Americans from 2012 to 2021 (total n = 37,776), as well as surveys of 20 additional countries spanning six continents (total n = 26,416), we undertake an expansive investigation of the asymmetry thesis. Since conspiracy theory beliefs are associated with dangerous orientations and behaviors, it is imperative that social scientists better understand the connection between conspiracy theories and political orientations. However, the evidence for this proposition is mixed. A sizable literature tracing back to Richard Hofstadter’s The Paranoid Style (1964) argues that Republicans and conservatives are more likely to believe conspiracy theories than Democrats and liberals.

![]() It is a place of wonder and delight, and that feeling is magnified tenfold in ultrawide. This is a place where you can really feel the wind ripping through the fields and villages, where the light properly dazzles you and leaves you speechless as you watch it rise up over the horizon after a long night on the road. The Witcher III is not like those other worlds. Instead, it's just an empty void with a couple of people milling about in the corners, telling me to go and do this or that. Like there's no soul or depth to it beneath its shiny veneer. So often in RPGs I find the world around me just feels a bit, well, dead inside. I also have a bad habit of spending too much time gawping at the scenery, which is a very easy thing to do in Forza Horizon 4, especially when there's so damn much of it. Braking is not a thing I comprehend when sitting behind the wheels of virtual cars (I blame too many years of pedal-to-the-metal Mario Kart racing), so I often spend a lot of time crashing instead of crossing the finishing line. I have never been very good at driving games. That, my friends, is worth the price of an ultrawide screen alone. ![]() You ain't seen nothing until you're eye-level with an enormous blue whale spanning the entire width of your screen. You might think you've got the measure of what Abzu has to offer, but trust me. It's the kind of game you want to gawp at for as long as possible, and what better way to do it than to literally drown your vision in its colourful shoals, majestic play of light and SO. It feels like Abzu was made for ultrawide monitors. I just want to dive into its boundless depths and forget that land ever existed. The opening alone is enough to make your jaw drop, what with all those light rays spilling into the water, swishing and swaying with the waves. Plus, that increased draw distance really does lend itself to some really quite lovely panoramic views. Of course, Red Dead 2 is an impressive technical showcase regardless of whether you're playing in ultrawide or 16:9, but stretching out that horizon feels like it was meant to be on PC. I played a good chunk of Rockstar's epic wild west rustle 'em up on the 32:9 Samsung CRG9 when it came in for testing, and you can read more about my ultrawide cowboy experience here. Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the best-looking PC games of all time, and it looks even more sumptuous in ultrawide. For now, though, here are the 35 best PC games that demand to be played in ultrawide. We also answer your burning questions about what the best ultrawide gaming monitor is and what kind of graphics card you need to play ultrawide games in our FAQ section right at the bottom of this article. There's truly something for everyone here. They range from big blockbusters to stunning indie classics, and cover a huge range of genres, from action adventure games and first person shooters to real time strategy titles and intense simulation games. In no particular order, here are the best ultrawide PC games that should be your first port of call for playing on a new ultrawide gaming monitor. Watch on YouTube The best ultrawide games on PC Here, though, I've focused on games that absolutely demand to be played in ultrawide because they're so gosh darn gorgeous. The good news is that more and more PC games are getting ultrawide support these days, and for a full list of games that support 21:9 and 32:9 aspect ratios, check out the list compiled by the good folks over at PC Gaming Wiki. Not all PC games support ultrawide resolutions, I should point out, and those that don't will leave you with unsightly black bars down either side of the screen. I've been a big fan of ultrawide gaming monitors for years now, as their extra screen space not only makes them great for juggling multiple desktop windows, but supported PC games also look uttery fantastic on them - and to prove it, I've put together this list of the best ultrawide games on PC.īelow you'll find over 30 of my favourite ultrawide PC games, complete with GIFs and photos of them running in ultrawide so you can see exactly what they look like in the flesh. Once you try one, though, there's no going back. ![]() Ultrawide gaming monitors can seem excessive compared to regular 16:9 gaming screens, especially when their demanding resolutions often require powerful and expensive graphics cards to make the most of them.

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorn1/31/2024 ![]() Although “Society for Cutting Up Men” does not appear in the text of the manifesto, Solanas did, in fact, identify SCUM with the Society for Cutting Up Men-it’s right there, on the title page of her self-produced 1967 edition, following the title: “Presentation of the rationale and program of action of SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men).….”. ‘Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned’ is one of two famous quotations from a largely forgotten Restoration play by William Congreve, The Mourning Bride (1697). Heller, for example, relying on Harron’s reprint of the 1968 Olympia Press version of SCUM Manifesto, concludes that “there is no reliable evidence that Solanas intended SCUM to stand as an acronym for the ‘Society for Cutting Up Men.’” Heller also cites an unpublished 1975 interview with Solanas that implies “Society for Cutting Up Men” was “the fabrication of her publisher, Maurice Girodias” (168).
